When cleaning stone countertops, many people think that they can use abrasive cleaners to quickly remove any spills or stains. However, this is not the case. Depending on the type of stone you have, the cleaning materials and methods you use will change. Cleaning your stone countertops correctly will allow them to stay looking shiny and brand new for as long as possible.
Marble and Granite
Marble and granite countertops are a beautiful addition to any kitchen. However, they require special care to keep them looking their best for the years they are in use. Use the materials and techniques below to safely clean these stone countertops.
Tools:
- Water
- Dish soap
- Microfiber cloths
- Baking Soda
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Plastic Wrap
- Tape
Cleaning:
For everyday cleaning, use a mix of warm water and mild dish soap with a microfiber towel. Do not use acidic or abrasive cleaners because this can strip the stone or cause other abrasions.
For stains that won’t come off with everyday cleaning efforts, create a paste of baking soda and either water (for oil-based stains) or hydrogen peroxide (for water-based stains). Put the paste on the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, and tape down the edges to keep air out. Let the paste sit for a few days, then rinse. If the stain is still visible, repeat this process.
Note: spot test the above method to ensure it won’t affect the color or finish of the stone.
Quartz
Like marble and granite, quartz countertops add a beautiful effect to your kitchen. Use the suggested cleaning techniques below to keep them looking brand new.
Tools:
- Dish soap
- Water
- Nonabrasive glass or surface cleaner
- Microfiber cloths
- Nonabrasive sponge
Cleaning:
Quartz countertops can be cleaned with mild dish soap, warm water, and a microfiber cloth for everyday spills and cleaning. A benefit of choosing a quartz countertop is that they are mostly stain resistant. However, stains do occasionally happen. For this, use a glass cleaner and nonabrasive sponge to gently work the stain away.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Cleaning Stone Countertops
Do clean surfaces with mild detergent or stone soap.
Do thoroughly rinse and dry the surface with clean, clear water after washing.
Do blot up spills immediately.
Don’t use vinegar, lemon juice, or other cleaners containing acids on marble, limestone, travertine, or onyx surfaces.
Don’t use cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, or tub & tile cleaners.
Don’t use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers.
Don’t mix bleach and ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas.
Don’t ever mix chemicals together unless directions specifically instruct you to do so.
