Unless you’re a plumber, electrician, or other skilled worker, you may question your ability to remodel your own bathroom. Out of all rooms in your home (except maybe your kitchen), the bathroom is one of the most complex rooms to remodel. From plumbing and electric to tile and grout, almost every element requires knowledge of a skilled trade. Even experienced home renovators will hire a professional to remodel their bathroom.
If you’re considering remodeling your own bathroom, we’ve put together a list of things to consider before you purchase some new tile and pick up a hammer.
Time.
Time is the most important thing to consider when it comes to remodeling your own bathroom. It will take most “DIYers” several days to fully complete a bathroom remodel, whereas a professional team can get the majority of the project (if not the entire project) completed in one day. If you have multiple bathrooms in your home and can go without one for a few days, you can definitely consider doing at least part of the remodel on your own.
Money.
Most people will consider remodeling their own bathroom if money is tight and they want to save on the labor cost. While some parts of a bathroom remodel can be easily done by an amateur, tackling complex plumbing and wiring can end up costing more if something gets messed up.
Experience.
Most people regardless of experience will find some aspects of a bathroom remodel to be fairly easy. For example, installing your own flooring can be easy if you find an easy-to-install LVT or tile. Hanging drywall is a bit more complicated, but for people with an eye for detail, it can save you a bit of money. When it comes to more complex parts like plumbing and wiring, we recommend tackling this only if you’re very confident and experienced.
A full, comprehensive remodel is best done by the pros if you have little time and experience. However, if you’re willing to take the time to learn how to install some of the more basic elements, remodeling parts of your bathroom on your own can save you time and money.
