Bathtubs & Accessories
for Special Needs

Elderly , incapacitated, or those with special needs often find bathtubs difficult to maneuver. There are models available that are ADA compliant that enable easier access and egress. Many people are installing these models in their home in anticipation of possible future needs.

Bathtubs
ADA compliant tubs are available in many styles. Most are designed for placement in the typical 3-wall alcove - if for no other reason, than to allow for replacement of the typical American tub.

Ideally, tubs serving special needs should be larger than the typical 5' tub. Longer (66" as opposed to 60") and deeper (over 20"), and wider (36" or more) to allow for better comfort, maneuverability and immersion in the water.

It should also be accessible from at least 3 sides. This allows both bather and caregiver ample access room. Below are just a few samples of what is available.

Kohler Maestro tub - K-839While persons using typical American tubs step into them upright, those negotiating the higher sides of European, Greek, Roman, Japanese tubs, commonly called soaking tubs (18" - 26" ) tend to bend over when getting into the tub.

Rails incorporated in the tub design, or firmly fixed to the wall will provide the needed safety.

Kohler Caribbean Bathtub K-810Another factor often overlooked, is that almost everyone experiences some degree of difficulty getting out of the bath, especially if the tub is placed in an alcove.

Horizontal rails that are incorporated into the tub design not only provide additional leverage and security for entering and exiting the tub, but also eliminate potential obstacles encountered when using clamp-on side rails.

One-Piece Tub/Shower Combinations

ADA Compliant - Kohler K-12106-HN Freewill Barrier-Free Whirlpool and Shower Module in Acrylic ADA compliant one-piece acrylic bath and shower units are available. These units are generally 5' long x 36" wide, and installed during new construction into an alcove. These units will not fit through a standard doorway, and are not recommended for remodeling projects. They are not pre-drilled for faucets.

Factory installed grab bars are available in nylon, and polished or brushed stainless steel. The units have a slip-resistant floor for added safety. Depending on the manufacturer, seats are either drop down, or multi-position and removable.

The FreewillTM Barrier-free Bath and Shower Module by Kohler, shown at the right, is also available in a whirlpool model.

Transfer Benches

A transfer bench aids entry and exit, and is ideal for those who have difficulty standing for extended periods of time while bathing or showering. Some tubs feature a wide shelf on which to sit before getting into the tub. Caregivers find these tubs easy to use and easy on their backs.

Transfer benches do take up space from the length of the tub, as much as 24".
They may present a serious obstacle when used in a 5' or shorter tub.

transfer bench for use in the bath This chair spans across the rim of the tub (half is inside the tub, half is outside). The bather sits on the chair on the outside of the tub and then slides themselves into the tub. The bather still must lift their legs into the tub, but they can do this one at a time from the seated position.

Many transfer benches offer features such as space for shower curtain placement, adjustable seat height, and slip resistant seats and backs.

C.D. Sparling Folding Tub Bench The C.D. Sparling Folding Tub Bench meets ADA requirements, and the patented design of the Folding Tub Bench allows for easy removal and storage when not in use. Easy installation for existing and new construction, price and appearance are added features to this design.

Options

Kohler's Bath Footstop
can be placed at the base of the feet or under the thighs to comfortably adjust bathing position in a tub or whirlpool.

A welcome addition to the bath is Kohler's removable bath/whirlpool pillow is comfortable addition to any bath or whirlpool not supplied with pillows. The vinyl covered 13 1/4" x 5 1/2" x 1" pillow attaches easily with 3 suction cups.

Last but not least, a hand-held shower should be installed in the tub.
